Stewarding means “Stopping by the woods on a snowy evening”

Much is required to keep over 9 miles of trails in proper condition and four miles available for skiing and snowshoeing. Frequent attention is required to keep the parking area accessible, the privy shoveled, the kiosk stocked and the trails cleared of blowdown and tracked out on skis or snowshoes. It means making continual improvements and updates, addressing occasional concerns, and preparing for group visits.

Stewardship also means almost daily ski adventures. It allows for profound silence, fresh tracks in deep powder, encounters with fellow outdoor enthusiasts and frequently stopping by the woods on a cold and, occasionally, moonlit evening.

Recently stewardship enabled my family and I to hear a barred owl’s plaintiff question, “who cooks for you,” to be startled by a ruffed grouse springing from its snowbound roost, and to be delighted by river otters cavorting near an ice hole below Doris’ Deck.

All in all, stewardship is a pretty amazing deal.

Please join us for a ski or snowshoe before winter 2020 is just a memory.
