Stewards…. Get by With a Little Help From Their Friends

While the Carney family is able to keep up with the day to day tasks associated with maintaining the grounds of BWP N & S and its nearly 10 mile trail system…, it is both imperative and enjoyable to have the support of others to complete special projects and promote community.

The ADK Black River Chapter, spearheaded by event organizer Linda Burns, has been a mainstay for us. They sponsor / organize both fall and spring work days and recreational events here. We are grateful for their ability to productively mix business with pleasure!

The latest work day took place on October 1st. Eight of us were able to excavate several truckloads of invasive honeysuckle and create beds for two new gardens to be planted with late blooming plants. We now feature five pollinator gardens ranging in size from 60 to 600 sq feet.

We are proud members of the Black River ADK chapter and are honored to be on their advisory board. This organization sponsors many enjoyable outings. You can join the adventure by visiting their website:

Thank you, Black River ADK!

The ADK work day was followed by a full day of work and study in BWP South with fellow naturalist and friend of the Baker Woods Preserve, Hannes Ringoot. We enjoyed a perfect autumn day including a short paddle to Blue Heron Landing, puzzling over tree species and, significantly, completing the last of the bog bridges on the BWP S trails.

Thank you, Hannes!
